How to Prepare for NTSE Stage II 2018

Results of NTSE Stage I 2017-18 of most states are out, rest will have their results very soon. Congratulations to all those who have made it to NTSE Stage II.
Now the most important question emerging in your mind would be -
'How to prepare for NTSE Stage II ?'
For this year's NTSE Stage II, NCERT has made some changes

According to the above notice, now

Language Paper has been withdrawn
MAT paper will have 100 questions (time 120 minutes)
There will be NO NEGATIVE MARKING
Merit will be of 200 marks (MAT paper of 100 Marks + SAT paper of 100 Marks)

Coming to the main topic i.e. -
How to prepare for NTSE Stage II

Last year's Cut off marks makes it very much clear that how attentive one must be while solving NTSE Stage II Paper.
cut off for General Candidates - 77/150
cut off for SC Candidates - 46.67/150
cut off for ST Candidates -47.67/150
(keep in mind last year's merit was made from maximum 150 marks, this time it will be 200 marks. No Negative marking from this year)

NTSE Stage I belongs to State Board, so generally syllabus covered is from State Board (specially affects the questions asked in Social Science part) as well as CBSE board. Some of the States follow only CBSE Board syllabus
In NTSE Stage II only CBSE Board syllabus i.e. chapters of Class IX and X of NCERT book will be there (exceptionally a few questions in Science and Maths can be asked from Class XIth syllabus also). It's advised to go through the previous year's papers.
Students who are from CBSE board will definitely be in a advantageous position. Preparations for your Board exams will get you prepared for the topics of class X, after board exams you just need to brush up the topics of Class IX.
Social Science (40 marks) is the second most important subject after MAT (100 marks), which will decide the outcomes in NTSE Stage II. But the problematic thing is most of the students who have cleared NTSE Stage I opt for Science/Maths subjects in class XI and are not much interested in studying Social Science for NTSE Stage II and the same can be said for MAT also. From this year MAT will be having 100 questions i.e. 100 marks.  This is the area where we have to be very cautious. Those students who will score maximum in these two subjects can be very much sure of making it to the final list of NTSE Scholars
For MAT Paper
All the topics prepared during NTSE Stage 1 needs to be revised thoroughly. The level of questions in Stage II are quite difficult so students need to practice more problems of various competitive exams like CAT/MBA entrance exam, NSO, IMO, NTSE Stage I papers of different states.
For Social Science Section of SAT Paper
Here I am presenting the paper analysis of NTSE Stage II Social Science questions (year 2013 to 2017), hope it will help you in better preparation of your NTSE Stage II paper
Generally the number of questions asked from Social Science section are 15 from History (total 16 chapters), 15 from Geography (total 13 chapters), 5 from Civics (total 14 chapters) and 5 from Economics (total 9 chapters)
Priority must be given to History, Geography and Economics (just for 5 questions of Civics, emphasis on 14 chapters doesn't made much sense). Syllabus of class IX as well as class X should be given equal importance
Practice of map questions from Geography section is must
BUT THE YEAR 2017 WAS AN EXCEPTION
Number of Question asked from History section - 12
Number of Question asked from Geography section - 12
Number of Question asked from Civics section - 08
Number of Question asked from Economics section - 08
(the above analysis means that our first preference should be History & Geography and then have to concentrate equally on Civics and Economics)
Other then the change in number of questions, one more change was observed. Some of the questions (Q.No.73 to 78) in Geography section were not mentioned anywhere in the NCERT books of Class IX and X. In Economics section most of the question are in Numerical form, if your concepts related to particular topics are clear, you will be able to workout the answer. Mere cramming of the topics will not help you.
Hope this analysis of Social Science subject questions asked in previous years will help you in better preparation of NTSE Stage II paper
(questions marked * were indirectly related to these chapters)
