CBSE agrees to re-evaluate exam papers of students

Students who took Class XII examinations can apply to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for a relook at their answer sheets if they are not satisfied with their score.

CBSE on Friday gave an undertaking in the Delhi high court that it would relax its verification scheme to allow students to approach it for scrutiny of answer sheets.

The Board also assured the court that all requests by students would be considered on a 'first come first serve basis'. In case of those who have already applied for re-verification, their papers will be scrutinised on a priority basis as per the marking scheme.

CBSE also assured the court that it won't act upon the undertakings it extracted from students that they cannot approach courts on account of their having obtained photocopies of the answer-sheets.
The marking schemes of the CBSE for respective subjects shall be uploaded on its website in two working days. The ASG's submission came during hearing of petitions by students, who gave the board exams this year, against the CBSE's decision to scrap its re-evaluation policy.

From 2018, CBSE boards to begin a month early

Come 2018, Class X and XII Board exams will take place in February instead of March as the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to advance the cycle of exams and related activities from 2018-19 as a part of reforms focused on "error-free evaluation".

CBSE chairman R K Chaturvedi said that this would also advance the date of declaration of results, which generally come around the third or fourth week of May. Chaturvedi told TOI, "The exam inations should start around February 15 and we are also planning to complete them within a month."

The early results, the board believes, will also help CBSE students with the undergraduate admission process. "Otherwise it has been a neckand-neck affair," said the chairperson.

How much error free is the evaluation process of CBSE ?

Amidst the wide scale dissatisfaction amongst students regarding the evaluation of Class XII answer sheets, now Delhi High Court has raised question on the evaluation by CBSE. the Delhi high court on Monday wondered if there were errors in the totalling of marks in CBSE's Class XII exams, how many errors would be there in the evaluation.

A bench of Justices Sanjeev Sachdeva and A K Chawla referred to the report while hearing a plea filed by students challenging the scrapping of the re-evaluationpolicy by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The high court will go through CBSE's reply and hear the matter again on June 21.

Discrepancy in the evaliuation by CBSE has triggered an outcry among parents and students. They not only want the window for verification of marks extended, but are also demanding that CBSE should reopen the re-evaluation process and make available photocopies of the evaluated answer scripts without any rider. There are many who applied for the verification process, but are skipping the step of obtaining the photocopy and instead filing RTIs to get it. Parents say that they have not applied for the photocopy because CBSE is taking an affidavit stating that the 'evaluated answer book shall also not be challenged by any examinee in the court of law or make any claim on this account in any forum'.

CBSE shocker: Huge errors in totalling board exam marks

A Mumbai student who scored 80% and above in all is subjects, scored just 50 in maths. After verification, his marks were revised to 90.
Sonali, a Delhi student, was horrified to learn, on May 29, that she had scored a mere 68 in mathematics in her Class XII exam.

It was only after the two students applied to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for verification — retotaling of marks — that Samiksha's 42 more than doubled to 90. With 99 in economics, 95 in accountancy and 96 in business studies, the maths marks just didn't add up. Samiksha Sharma's dream of making it to a North Campus college was almost shattered when she scored 42 in maths, after scoring well in English, Business Studies and Fine Arts. Another economics student who was 'failed' with 9 marks finally ended up with 45.
A senior CBSE official admitted that the number of applications for verification of marks has been unprecedented. Another senior official with the CBSE exam branch, while agreeing that there were mistakes in the process, said that the difference could be due to various reasons — mistakes in totaling of marks, incorrect transfer of marks to the title page (the front of the answer books) and detachment of supplementary answer books.

All boards to move towards common curriculum, papers

The Union ministry of human resource development (HRD) will curb the "malpractice of spiking of marks" and implement a more scientific moderation policy from 2018. The HRD ministry has set up an inter-board working group (IBWG), comprising eight boards, to work out the details for stopping of moderation and upward revision, or spiking, of marks.

IBWG will deliberate regularly and work out a model for all boards to follow.

All boards will also move towards adopting a common core curriculum, the grace marks policy is to be uploaded on websites, and marks and grades for extracurricular subjects are to be given separately. The plan is also to share question papers (with CBSE) to bring about uniformity in assessment. It has also been decided that CBSE will share question papers with states that use NCERT books 'so that there is uniformity across all states in difficulty levels of questions and in the subsequent evaluations'.

How scoring high percentage in CBSE is easier in comparison to State Boards

While throughout the country and specially in Bihar there is an intense uproar over the Bihar Board results, 64 % students failed. Students who have cleared IIT mains, NDA, Engineering and many other exams have failed in class XII Bihar Board exams and that also scoring merely 4,5 or 6 marks in Physics, Chemistry etc.
While in Central Board of Secondary Education up to 10 marks were given as grace for candidates who failed to get qualifying marks. Up to 11 extra marks were given in accountancy, 10 in mathematics and 8 in Physics and Chemistry.
This is apart from set-wise moderated marks awarded due to difference in difficulty level and other discrepancies. In addition , there are set-specific extra marks given to same question paper(s). For example while physics has been awarded 8 marks as moderation, for 'SET 2' and 'SET 3', an additional 1 marks has been awarded
