CBSE Eases Class X Pass Norms

Students taking CBSE's Class X exam next month will not need to seperately pass in the 80 mark written test and internal assessment of 20 marks. They just need 33% overall.
Students appearing in Class X CBSE Board examination this year will be exempted from the mandatory separate pass criteria in the subjects having internal assessment component of 20 marks and 80 marks of Board examination. The Central Board of Secondary Education on Tuesday notified this one-time exemption.
The current batch of Class X students will sit for the Board exam on March 5, which will be the first mandatory public exam after eight years. The CBSE had introduced the Comprehensive and Continuous Evaluation (CCE) scheme along with optional Board exam. All others took the school-based exam.

How to Prepare for NTSE Stage II 2018

Results of NTSE Stage I 2017-18 of most states are out, rest will have their results very soon. Congratulations to all those who have made it to NTSE Stage II.
Now the most important question emerging in your mind would be -
'How to prepare for NTSE Stage II ?'
For this year's NTSE Stage II, NCERT has made some changes

According to the above notice, now

Language Paper has been withdrawn
MAT paper will have 100 questions (time 120 minutes)
There will be NO NEGATIVE MARKING
Merit will be of 200 marks (MAT paper of 100 Marks + SAT paper of 100 Marks)

Coming to the main topic i.e. -
How to prepare for NTSE Stage II

Last year's Cut off marks makes it very much clear that how attentive one must be while solving NTSE Stage II Paper.
cut off for General Candidates - 77/150
cut off for SC Candidates - 46.67/150
cut off for ST Candidates -47.67/150
(keep in mind last year's merit was made from maximum 150 marks, this time it will be 200 marks. No Negative marking from this year)

NTSE Stage I belongs to State Board, so generally syllabus covered is from State Board (specially affects the questions asked in Social Science part) as well as CBSE board. Some of the States follow only CBSE Board syllabus
In NTSE Stage II only CBSE Board syllabus i.e. chapters of Class IX and X of NCERT book will be there (exceptionally a few questions in Science and Maths can be asked from Class XIth syllabus also). It's advised to go through the previous year's papers.
Students who are from CBSE board will definitely be in a advantageous position. Preparations for your Board exams will get you prepared for the topics of class X, after board exams you just need to brush up the topics of Class IX.
Social Science (40 marks) is the second most important subject after MAT (100 marks), which will decide the outcomes in NTSE Stage II. But the problematic thing is most of the students who have cleared NTSE Stage I opt for Science/Maths subjects in class XI and are not much interested in studying Social Science for NTSE Stage II and the same can be said for MAT also. From this year MAT will be having 100 questions i.e. 100 marks.  This is the area where we have to be very cautious. Those students who will score maximum in these two subjects can be very much sure of making it to the final list of NTSE Scholars
For MAT Paper
All the topics prepared during NTSE Stage 1 needs to be revised thoroughly. The level of questions in Stage II are quite difficult so students need to practice more problems of various competitive exams like CAT/MBA entrance exam, NSO, IMO, NTSE Stage I papers of different states.
For Social Science Section of SAT Paper
Here I am presenting the paper analysis of NTSE Stage II Social Science questions (year 2013 to 2017), hope it will help you in better preparation of your NTSE Stage II paper
Generally the number of questions asked from Social Science section are 15 from History (total 16 chapters), 15 from Geography (total 13 chapters), 5 from Civics (total 14 chapters) and 5 from Economics (total 9 chapters)
Priority must be given to History, Geography and Economics (just for 5 questions of Civics, emphasis on 14 chapters doesn't made much sense). Syllabus of class IX as well as class X should be given equal importance
Practice of map questions from Geography section is must
BUT THE YEAR 2017 WAS AN EXCEPTION
Number of Question asked from History section - 12
Number of Question asked from Geography section - 12
Number of Question asked from Civics section - 08
Number of Question asked from Economics section - 08
(the above analysis means that our first preference should be History & Geography and then have to concentrate equally on Civics and Economics)
Other then the change in number of questions, one more change was observed. Some of the questions (Q.No.73 to 78) in Geography section were not mentioned anywhere in the NCERT books of Class IX and X. In Economics section most of the question are in Numerical form, if your concepts related to particular topics are clear, you will be able to workout the answer. Mere cramming of the topics will not help you.
Hope this analysis of Social Science subject questions asked in previous years will help you in better preparation of NTSE Stage II paper
(questions marked * were indirectly related to these chapters)

About 4300 students will appear for NTSE Stage II Examination, out of which 1000 will be rewarded the NTSE Scholarship. Just go by the table and compare your marks with the cut off of other states and workout how much you have to prepare for NTSE Stage II Examination

How to score maximum in Social Science subject of Class X CBSE Board Exam 2019-20

Here are some preparation tips for Social Science subject :

  1. Plan  your preparation thoroughly and methodically before the exam. Plan subject wise e.g. start with History revision first as it is more lengthy and will take more time. Next ,you can plan to revise political science as you have to memorize most of the chapters. Geography requires more understanding than rote as it will increase your overall score. Even if you do not know the exact answer for a particular question, even general knowledge answers fetch you marks. Revise Economics at the end, as it has least number of chapters. Solving previous years questions papers is always of great help.
  2. Once you are done with all the subject, do a consolidated study and holistically analyze social science as a subject and make bullet point notes of all the important topics.
  3. Scan each and every page of your NCERT book. CBSE board strictly follows NCERT book and over the years every single question has been asked from NCERT book only. Once you are thorough with this book, then only go through other Refreshers or Guide books.
  4. Take some mock tests which are available online. Also solve CBSE, sample papers which are also available on the CBSE website.
  5. On the day of your exam, spend first 15 minutes analyzing the question paper and figuring out the answers.
  6. Attempt what you are thorough with, first. Do not take 1 Mark questions lightly as they can be tricky sometimes, but if you are thorough with your subject, 1 markers are most scoring.
  7. Attempt 3 markers in points and always write one extra point if you have time. Always follow your point with at least one line explanation.
  8. Attempt 5 marks questions also in points. 5 points to be precise but do not forget to explain these points as they are long answer type questions. Substantiate your answers with diagrams in geography and flow charts in political science.
  9. For questions like Define or Differentiate, always substantiate your answer with suitable examples for the same.
  10. Map question in geography is a sure shot scorer and prepare some obvious questions thoroughly like  soils, airports, dams , and nuclear power plants. Mark them clearly using colored pencils. Do not use sketch pens please.
  11. Leave last 15 minutes duration of the exam for revision. Scan through both the question paper and the answer sheet for any un-attempted questions. Also check for improvements in any particular answer if any.
  12. Last but not the least, keep wits about yourself and maintain a calm composure while attempting your paper.

I received many complaints from students who have scored above then the cut off declared, but their names were missing from the list of the selected students.
Normally about 250 students get selected from Rajasthan in NTSE Stage I, but this time only 236 students found place in the selected list
The cut off given for PH (Physically Handicapped) category was 64, but in the list of selected students, none of the student was of PH category
Let's hope of the BEST OUTCOME
in favour of the students
