'The ultimate honour'

Accepting a long standing demand of the armed forces, Union Human Resource and Development Minister Smriti Irani has approved the stories of valour of all Param Vir Chakra awardees to be included as supplementary reading material for students of Classes 9 and 10. 
This is expected to be a part of school curriculum from the coming academic year. Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the nation’s highest gallantry medal in war awarded for unparalleled bravery against all odds in the line of fire.
Irani is also personally supervising the ‘Veer Gatha’ project of the National Book Trust (NBT) which will have the 21 stories of valour – from Major Somnath Sharma, who was awarded the nation’s first highest gallantry award in the Battle of Budgam in October 1947 to the story of Captain Vikram Batra who was posthumously awarded the PVC in Kargil in 1999.
