Calculate your chances of being NTSE Scholar 2016-17

Results of NTSE Stage I 2016-17 of almost all states are out. Here I have compiled them with total number of selections and cut off for various categories (few states have not declared cut off). Analyzing individual's performance and comparing it with others can give you an overview about your chances of finally making it to be NTSE Scholar.
NTSE aspirants from States which follow CBSE curriculum in NTSE Stage I definitely have advantage over others. If the cut off of their State in NTSE Stage I is also high (above 130), they can easily make it to top 1000 students in NTSE Stage II.
Students who have studied class IX and X from State board will face problem as syllabus of NTSE Stage II is from NCERT. Same way students from States which follow State board syllabus for NTSE Stage I will also face problem, because had to study State syllabus for NTSE Stage I and now will have to concentrate on NCERT syllabus.
Previous results show that students from Delhi, Rajasthan and Chandigarh have easily made it to the top 1000 students in NTSE Stage II, reason - syllabus for NTSE Stage I and II both are from NCERT and cut off in Stage I in these areas were also very high. (Cut off for Delhi this year for General Category was 133, Rajasthan - 137 and in Chandigarh was 142).
Last year maximum students who made it to be NTSE Scholars were from Rajasthan (130 selections), followed by Maharashtra (103) and UP (86).
If we go by % of selections - Chandigarh was on the top (8 became NTSE Scholar out of 13 students who cleared NTSE Stage I - 61.54% success rate), Delhi 49 of 86 (56.98%), Rajasthan 130 of 274 (47.45%). Other than these Haryana 39.22%, Odisha 34.38%, Punjab 33.33% were the major contributors

CBSE unveils new exam format for classes VI to IX

The Central Board of Secondary Education has formally junked the continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE) scheme for classes VI to IX, being followed in affiliated schools since 2009. Replacing it from the coming academic year (2017-18) is a new format — 'uniform system of assessment, examination and report card' — that aims at standardizing teaching and evaluation across schools.

All students will be under a "uniform assessment" process from Class VI onwards and schools will have to adhere to CBSE's template, from examinations to report cards, which will now bear the logo of the board.

Remodeled Assessment Scheme of Class X Board Examination from Academic year 2017-18

The CBSE has remodelled its assessment scheme, allowing Class 10 students in vocational stream who fail in any of social science, mathematics and science papers to replace it with a vocational subject. However, if a candidate wishes to reappear for the failed subject, he/she can appear in the compartment examination. Under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF), students in vocational stream have to study six subjects, wherein the sixth subject is an additional subject. The CBSE offers two streams in Class 10 -- vocational and academic. Those opting for academic stream have to study five subjects - two languages, social science, mathematics and science. Those opting for the vocational stream, however, will have to compulsorily study the sixth subject under the NSQF with the remodelled assessment scheme being implemented from 2017-18 academic year.

How to prepare for NTSE Stage II

Results of NTSE Stage I 2016-17 of most states are out, rest will have their results very soon. Congratulations to all those who have made it to NTSE Stage II.
Now the most important question emerging in your mind would be - 'How to prepare for NTSE Stage II ?'
NTSE Stage I belongs to State Board, so generally syllabus covered is from State Board (specially affects the questions asked in Social Science part) as well as CBSE board. Some of the States follow only CBSE Board syllabus
In NTSE Stage II only CBSE Board syllabus i.e. chapters of Class IX and X of NCERT book will be there (exceptionally a few questions in Science and Maths can be asked from Class XIth syllabus also). Second and most important thing NTSE Stage II will have NEGATIVE MARKING (1/3 marks would be deducted for every wrong answer) and the difficulty level of the questions will be much higher in comparison to NTSE Stage I paper. So be very careful while answering your questions, its better to leave doubtful questions. It's advised to go through the previous year's papers.
cut off for General Candidates - 85.09/150
cut off for SC Candidates - 56.43/150

cut off for ST Candidates -52.12/150
Last year's Cut off marks makes it very much clear that how attentive one must be while solving NTSE Stage II Paper.
Social Science (40 marks) is the second most important subject after MAT (50 marks), which will decide the outcomes in NTSE Stage II. But the problematic thing is most of the students who have cleared NTSE Stage I opt for science/maths subjects in class XI and are not much interested in studying Social Science for NTSE Stage II. This is the area where we have to be very cautious. Those students who will score maximum in these two subjects can be sure that they are making it to NTSE Scholars
Here I am presenting the paper analysis of  NTSE Stage II (year 2013 to 2016), hope it will help you in better preparation of your NTSE Stage II paper
Keeping in mind the number of questions asked from Social Science section
15 from History (total 16 chapters), 15 from Geography (total 13 chapters), 5 from Civics (total 14 chapters) and 5 from Economics (total 9 chapters)
Priority must be given to History, Geography and Economics (just for 5 questions of Civics, emphasisng on 14 chapters doesn't makes much sense). Syllabus of class IX as well as class X should be given equal importance
Practice of map questions from Geography section is must
Hope this analysis will help you in better preparation of NTSE Stage II paper
